Executive Function and Organizational Support
Executive Functioning is a way of describing the set of skills that help us complete our day-to-day tasks. From physical organization and to time management to emotional regulation and flexibility, executive function skills are the foundation of learning. While some people pick up these skills naturally in their life, many people need instruction and strategies to learn executive functioning, just like for math, reading and science. That's where I come in!
Educational Consulting
Learning, or being in charge of someone else's learning, can be hard! When there is disability or neurodivergence involved, that gets magnified and can become even more confusing. Sometimes it's helpful to have someone else advise about potential options and give an outside point of view. I have the unique perspective and ability to support families in making decisions that come from my experience as a public school special education teacher, a homeschool alumni, an educational support specialist, and as a neurodivergent person, myself.
Individualized Instruction and Course Replacement
Almost all teachers would agree that the most important ingredient in learning is student engagement. For some students, engaging with a particular subject is especially hard for reasons that can easily be combated with personalized, creative, one-on-one instruction. As a licensed teacher, I can work with your student to meet the goals and evidence outcomes clarified in the Colorado Department of Education State Standards in a hands-on, specialized way. The records of our learning together will be compiled into a portfolio that can either be kept for personal records, or shared with district professionals for course replacement. Reach out today if you would like to learn more, or see examples of previous individualized courses!
Individualized Literacy Instruction
Teaching literacy beyond elementary levels is an often misunderstood and complex endeavor. Without age-appropriate explanations and a recognition of the skills that a student has always mastered, explicit literacy instruction can become disheartening. However, with individualized screening to identify the elements that a student has already mastered, and the freedom of one-on-one instruction learning literacy skills doesn't have to be a bore! Using a combination of Orton-Gillingham, Lindamood-Bell, and HD word Strategies, I work with students to directly address the root issue of ongoing literacy deficits in a way that empowers future independence.
Interpersonal and Life Skills Support
Some of the most important skills to have in life have nothing to do with academics! However, that doesn't mean that they always come naturally. Like most things, life skills and interpersonal skills are best taught in the situations in which they are going to be used. That means that our classroom becomes the world around us. From learning kitchen safety while frying eggs to practicing communication and money skills on ice cream outings with friends, practicality is key. Reach out today to hear about how museum trips teach how to create and communicate opinions, how party planning can teach financial literacy skills like calculating tax, and how going to the mall can teach navigation and self-advocacy.
Homeschool Curriculum Management
Homeschooling can be such a wonderful and loving opportunity for families, but it requires a lot of dedication and determination, especially with Middle and High Schoolers! Many homeschool families use a combination of curriculums and educational systems as students grow into more advanced topics, which can become somewhat overwhelming. I can help manage student curriculum by creating weekly plans and meetings throughout the week to ensure goals are being met, and assignments are completed, clarify confusing material, and supplement instruction as needed.
